Description
The porcupine glass jug from Anna von Lipa is one of the most popular models in the series. It is handmade and mouth blown in crystal glass at an old glassworks in Bohemia in the Czech Republic, where you still work according to traditional methods and with great craft experience. The distinctive hedgehog pattern – in English called Hobnail – is created using a special shape, after which the glass is blown and shaped by hand. Therefore, each jug gets its own expression, and small differences in thickness, air bubbles and variations in color are completely natural. This is precisely part of the charm of mouth-blown glass. Anna von Lipa is especially known for her many beautiful colours and combinations. Some colors are made with what you call Underlaid colorwhere a colour is combined with clear crystal glass. This adds depth and playfulness to the glass. It takes a lot of experience to work with the bright and more complex colors, and that is something that Anna von Lipa has been really good at developing. The hedgehog glass series has become a whole collection. In addition to the popular jugs, the series is available as small tapas bowls, bowls measuring approx. 17 cm and 24 cm, as well as several different vases. Here you will find both spherical vases and popular models such as the Blond vase and the Birdie vase. This makes the series really nice to collect and mix across colors and sizes.

The story behind the hedgehog glass series

The series is produced at one of the old glassworks in Bohemia, where the traditions go back a long way. Manufacturing is a slow process with many steps. The raw materials are mixed, the oven is prepared, the mold is made, the glass is blown, the excess glass is cut off, the edges are burned and sanded, and eventually the glass is post-treated. It is precisely this process that makes porcupine glasses completely different from mass-produced glass. You should expect small differences from product to product and see them as part of the handmade expression. No pots, bowls or vases are exactly alike. All Anna von Lipa's mouth-blown glasses can go into the dishwasher. We recommend a gentle glass programme at max. 40°C and preferably without long drying programmes. It is also a good idea to ensure that the salt and relaxation in the dishwasher are set correctly.
