XO Handcraft: designed in Denmark, shaped in India

XO Handcraft was founded by the Danish designer Sif, who through a great love of old craft traditions and recycled materials has created a brand built on handmade figures and Christmas decorations. The design takes place in Denmark, while the figures are shaped by skilled female artisans in India.

Material: recycled cardboard maché

Here, something as simple as old paper and cotton scraps are transformed into figures, animals and decorations. The paper maché (cotton maché) is made from recycled paper, old newspapers and cardboard boxes and surplus cotton from the textile and fashion industry - materials that might otherwise have ended up as waste. Paper and cotton are torn into small pieces, mixed with water and a natural, plant-based starch, until it becomes a soft pulp, which is formed by hand, dries and finally ground.

A counterpart to mass produced ornaments

The process is time-consuming, and each step requires skill and patience - therefore, no two figures are quite alike, and small differences in shape and color are part of the handmade expression. Remix by Sofie has chosen XO Handcraft because the brand combines Danish design, traditional craftsmanship, recycling and social care with a playful and personal expression.
