Christmas hanger set in cotton maché – letter, mailbox and pigeon

This set of letters, mailboxes and doves is one of the more telling motifs in XO Handcrafts range - three figures in cardboard maché that together form a small Christmas story.

A Danish design brand with roots in craftsmanship

Behind XO Handcraft is the Danish designer Sif, who has built the brand around old craft traditions, recycled materials and a clear preference for things that are shaped with his hands rather than in a factory. The figures are designed in Denmark, while the actual workmanship takes place in India with skilled female craftsmen who shape each figure individually.

Papmaché - the craft behind the figures

The figures are made of cardboard maché (cotton maché): recycled paper from old newspapers and cardboard boxes, combined with surplus cotton from the textile and fashion industry. The materials are shredded into smaller pieces, mixed with water and a natural starch from plant roots, and processed into a soft pulp. The powder is shaped by hand to fit the desired shape, allowed to dry, and finally painted with fine, hand-painted details.

Each character is a little unique

Because each step is done by hand, there will always be slight variations from figure to figure - a quality that distinguishes handmade Christmas decorations from uniform plastic factory decorations. At Remix by Sofie we have chosen XO Handcraft because the brand unites Danish design, craftsmanship, recycling of residual materials and social care with a playful and personal expression. The three figures can be hung together as a small story, or spread out, among other things, red and white Christmas ornaments on the tree.
