The story behind XO Handcraft

XO Handcraft is created by the Danish designer Sif, whose love for old craft traditions and recycled materials permeates the entire brand. The figures are designed in Denmark and handcrafted by skilled female craftsmen in India – a collaboration that combines Scandinavian design with Indian craftsmanship.

How to turn paper and cotton into Christmas decorations

The figures are made of cardboard maché (cotton maché) - recycled paper, old newspapers and cardboard boxes, mixed with surplus cotton from the textile and fashion industry. The materials are torn into small pieces and mixed with water and a natural starch from plant roots until they become a soft, porridge-like pulp. Each figure is then shaped by hand, dried, and painted and decorated eventually with a brush.

Handmade rather than mass-produced

It is a slow process where each step requires skill and patience, and where no characters become quite alike - small variations in shape, color and surface are a natural part of the handmade expression.
