Ceramic plates – what is the difference between stoneware and porcelain?
When searching for ceramic plates, you may ask: “stoneware or porcelain?”, “is porcelain better than stoneware?”, “can ceramic plates withstand machine washing?”, “microwave safe?”, etc. Here are the answers and what you should know when choosing plates at Remix by Sofie.
What exactly is ceramic?
Ceramics is a broad term that covers different types of clay and wood burning – the most important types are:
-
Stoneware: Hard, robust and suitable for everyday use. Most often withstand both dishwasher and microwave oven. Perfect for families where the plates are used every day.
-
Porcelain: Light, elegant and often more transparent. It provides a more finely covered table, but may require a little more caution in everyday life. Good for special occasions.
What types of ceramic plates are there – and what are they used for?
| Disc type | Application | Practical tips |
|---|---|---|
| Cake plate / side plate | Perfect for cakes, small desserts, bread, cheese or a small salad. | Often used as a supplement plate at the dinner table. |
| Lunch plate | Good for breakfast, rye bread sandwiches or a light lunch salad. | A flexible size that is used daily. |
| Dinner plate | For dinner, larger meals or as a small dish for serving. | Many people prefer a slightly larger plate than the portion – it makes for a nicer presentation. |
| Deep plate | Soups, stews, breakfast dishes or desserts with sauce. | Available in several depths – choose whether it is for soup, pasta or dessert. |
| Pasta plate (low end / high end) | Although the name says pasta, it is also used for salads, appetizers or dishes with sauce. | A high edge is convenient for dishes with liquid – a low edge makes for a great presentation. |
Can ceramic plates withstand dishwashers?
Yes – but it depends on the material and glaze. Stoneware and porcelain with quality glaze are typically fine for machine washing, but very thin porcelain edges or glazes with metallic decorations can be damaged. It is always good to check the manufacturer's instructions.
Can ceramic plates be used in the microwave?
Often yes, especially stoneware and porcelain without metal and with suitable glaze. Metallic ornaments or decorations often make them unsuitable. If the clay is highly burned and the glaze is correctly fixed, the microwave can be used gently.
Can ceramic plates be used with air fryer?
It depends a lot on the quality and thickness. Many plates can withstand temperatures in a conventional oven, but air freezers can exert rapid heat changes, which can create thermal shock. It is best to use robust stone types without fine decorative edges.

Confetti suits both everyday and festive occasions and is an obvious choice if you want to create a colorful table setting that stands out.
-
The Mahaba series: Inspired by traditional craft techniques, but with a modern twist. The Mahaba plates have a more calm, organic glaze with soft colour schemes that make them timeless and elegant. They work perfectly for a Nordic interior where natural nuances and craftsmanship are in focus. The series is ideal for both everyday use and guest dinners where you want to impress with beautiful service.
